Ocean Speedway regular, Bobby Hogge IV, dominates Cecil Memorial
By Sean Stanish
Bobby Hogge IV of Salinas became the first repeat winner of the inaugural IMCA All-Star Modified season, after a dominating performance at the Mike Cecil Memorial. 42 of the best drivers in California and one from Missouri entered the evening and put on a spectacular show in memory of the long-time driver at Watsonville Speedway, who passed away in 1997 to cancer. At the start of the 30-lap feature, Austin Burke of Salinas and Susanville’s Riley Simmons battled for the top spot early, with Bobby Hogge IV making it three wide a couple laps later. Hogge took the lead on lap five after an incredible move on the high side of Burke and Simmons in turn two and down the back straight. The first caution came out on lap 12 for debris in turn one. Hogge continued to lead, but an intense battle was unfolding behind him for second between Chowchilla’s Alex Stanford, Merced’s Bubba Nelson, and others. Another yellow came out on lap 16 for Hollister’s Anthony Copeland, who stopped on track on lap 16. On the restart, Bobby Hogge IV pulled away from the pack, while Stanford and Nelson continued to fight for second. At the checkered, Bobby Hogge IV took the win and became the first repeat winner in the history of the All-Star Modified Tour. Four seconds behind was Alex Stanford. Bubba Nelson had one of his best runs since moving up to the Modifieds from the Sport Mods in third. Point leaders Riley Simmons’ and Olivehurst’s Ryan McDaniel’s consistency continued, and both captured top five finishes, coming home fourth and fifth, respectively. Austin Burke slid back a couple positions to come in sixth, with Oakley’s Kellen Chadwick, Cody Burke, Watsonville’s Kenny Nott, and Manteca’s Darrell Hughes II rounding out the top ten. Livermore’s Brian Cass, Kenny Nott, Ryan McDaniel, Bubba Nelson, and Riley Simmons took the heat race victories. Martinez’s Nick DeCarlo and Manteca’s Mitch Enos took wins in the B-Mains.
The series returns to the track this Saturday, August 13th, at Petaluma Speedway located at the Sonoma-Marin County Fairgrounds in Petaluma, CA.
