Ninth Edition of the Pettit Shootout On the Docket This Weekendracepmg
Watsonville, CA – The 9th Annual Pettit Shootout, honoring Pat and Jim Pettit, takes center stage at Ocean Speedway this weekend. The 2-day race will feature full shows for the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA SportMods, and Hobby Stocks. Saturday’s Modified program will be a part of the All Star Modified Tour. Legendary announcer Chet Christner will be behind the mic both nights for the Modifieds and SportMods.
Last year, Bobby Hogge IV of Salinas won another A-Main at the Pettit on Friday and Martinez’s Nick DeCarlo won the Saturday portion in the IMCA Modifieds. Salinas’ Austin Burke won last Friday’s weekly show over his brother, Cody. The brothers are deadlocked in a battle for the track championship which will be decided Saturday night. Austin leads Cody by 5 points. On Saturday, the All Star Modified Tour will crown a champion. Prunedale’s Tim Balding leads Martinez’s Anthony Slaney in Tour points. Friday’s show will pay $1,003 to win and $103 to start. Saturday’s race will boast a $3,006 payday and pays $206 to start the A-Main. The Hard Charger each night will also receive $250.
The IMCA SportMods have produced some thrilling races over the years at the Pettit and last year was no exception. Bakersfield’s Kevin Johnson won on Friday and Antioch’s Brent Curran stunned the field and won Saturday’s race as a rookie. Hollister’s Dennis Simunovich won the most recent weekly show at the track for his third win of the year. Atwater’s Jarrod Mounce leads the track point standings by 30 over Watsonville’s Adriane Frost. Mounce has won twice this year, including a big win at the Bill Egleston Memorial in May. Friday’s race will be $503 to win and $53 to start. Saturday will have a $1,006 to win and $106 to start race. The Hard Charger for the SportMods will receive $125 each night.
The Hobby Stock wins at last year’s Pettit went to two locals. San Jose’s Robert Gallaher grabbed the win on Friday and Watsonville’s Billy Nelson, the grandson of the race’s namesake, won on Saturday. Freedom’s Wally Kennedy won at last Friday’s weekly show for his first victory of the season. Robert Gallaher has a big lead in the point standings over his father, Joe, with three races left. Friday’s race will pay $303 to win on Friday and $506 to win on Saturday. The Hard Charger will earn $100 each night.
Anybody and everybody is invited to the annual prerace party and car show will take place on Thursday at 5:30pm at Carmona’s BBQ located at 1040 E Lake Ave, Watsonville, CA 95076.
Drivers are encouraged to bring their transponder to check in to help scoring. Drivers that have not competed at Ocean Speedway in 2019 will need to complete a W-9 before check in. All drivers in the IMCA divisions must be able to prove IMCA membership or purchase a membership at the track.

Pits are scheduled to open at noon and Grandstands will open at 4:30pm on Friday. Pill draw will close at 4:30pm. The driver’s meeting is scheduled for 4:45pm. On Saturday, everything is scheduled to take place one hour earlier. Pit passes are $50. All seating is general admission and tickets cost $18 for adults and $16 for seniors. Juniors 12-15 are $12 and Kids 6-11 are $9 and Kids 5 and under are free.
