Prestigious Howard Kaeding Classic On Tap For This Weekendracepmg
Watsonville, CA – One of the marquee events at the Ocean Speedway is finally upon us once again. The 7th edition of the Howard Kaeding Classic will take place this Friday and Saturday, July 14th and 15th. The event pays homage to one of West Coast Sprint Car Racing’s most important individuals, Howard Kaeding. Friday night, the California Civil War Sprint Cars square off with the Ocean Sprints pres. by Taco Bravo. Friday’s race will award points for both series. Auburn’s Andy Forsberg leads the charge in the Civil War Series and Sebastopol’s Geoff Ensign sits atop the Ocean Sprints standings after a blown engine in time trials for Justin Sanders saw his point’s lead disappear. The IMCA SportMods, American Stocks, and South Bay Dwarf Cars are also scheduled for Friday.
Saturday, the King of the West/NARC 410 Sprint Car series invades the Santa Cruz County ¼ mile for the second time this year. Saturday’s portion boasts a $5,000-to-win payday and $750 just for taking the green flag in the A-Main. The series is the sight of quite the points battle, with the top three drivers separated by a single point. Bud Kaeding, grandson of the race’s namesake, holds a 1-point lead over Cory Eliason and Gio Scelzi, who are tied for second. Kaeding has won once this season, but has consistently ran in the top 5 all year. Eliason, who also has one KWS/NARC victory to his credit in 2017, has picked up three Ocean Sprints victories this season and finished 3rd with the series at Ocean Speedway back on June 23rd. Arguably the hottest driver in the nation right now, Gio Scelzi, has grabbed three KWS/NARC wins this year and will look to add to that tally this Saturday night and regain the point’s lead. The West Coast’s best Modified drivers will also be in action with the All Star Modified Tour, with the winner taking home a cool $1,000. The IMCA SportMods are also scheduled.
