Cory Eliason Uses Late Race Heroics To Claim Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo Season Opener

(PETERSEN MEDIA- Watsonville, CA)- Fans at Watsonville, California’s Ocean Speedway were rewarded for their patience on Friday night. Following two rain outs to open the 2017 Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo season, the third time proved to be the charm on Friday night as Cory Eliason used a late race move to pick up the season opening event.

Geoff Ensign and Shane Golobic would lead the field to green for the 30-lap affair, and it would be Ensign taking early command of the race as Golobic, Kurt Nelson, Justin Sanders, and Cory Eliason gave chase on a slick Ocean Speedway surface.

Ensign’s quick start would quickly be slowed, as the red flag was needed on the race’s second circuit for Kyle Shaw. Shaw would escape from the wreckage, but his night would be finished.

Back underway, Ensign continued to set a torrid pace as the action behind him picked up. As he stretched his lead out on the slick ¼ mile speedway, Eliason would make his way by both Nelson and Sanders to take over third as he pressured Golobic for the runner up spot until the caution flew on the 13th lap.

The Sebastopol, CA driver continued to show the way, as he would get away from Golobic and Eliason, though lapped traffic would soon become a factor as the race got into an extended green flag run.

Behind the leader, Eliason would take over the second spot on the 19th lap, and begin to set his sights on the point. Once in second, Eliason could continue to search around the Ocean Speedway, as he would soon take a liking to the top-side of the speedway and make up ground on the leader.

On lap 25, Eliason would make a bid for the lead in turns one and two, but Ensign would counter and lead down the back stretch. Eliason would make the top work in turns three and four to grab the lead and essentially never look back.

While Ensign stayed with Eliason, the battle for third would pick up with Justin Sanders and Shane Golobic trading the spot in heavy traffic, with Sanders getting the spot in the waning laps.

Up front, Eliason would not be denied on this night, as he would pick up the win over Ensign, Sanders Golobic, and Kurt Nelson.

“We had a good car, and sometimes it’s better to be in second for a long period of time,” Cory Eliason explained. “We were able to move around the track and find some grip that Geoff (Ensign) didn’t know about, and get the win. I can’t thank this entire Antaya Motorsports team for all they do for me, and it’s nice to get another win with these guys.”

In his first appearance at the Ocean Speedway, Matthew Moles would finish sixth, Cole Macedo seventh, Jerry Bonnema eighth, Dustin Golobic ninth, and Jeremy Chisum would round out the Top-10.

All in all, 22 winged 360’s would check into the Ocean Speedway on Friday night the season opening event and Ensign and Golobic would lay down lay down identical quick time laps in qualifying with Ensign getting the nod for going out early.

A three-heat program would be in play on this night with wins going to Sanders, Bonnema, and Macedo, as Geoff Ensign would win the Dash and earn the right to start on the pole for the feature event.
