Watsonville, CA – May 3, 2015…Going into Friday sitting atop the Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo standings, Watsonville, CA based driver Justin Sanders started from the front row and worked traffic to perfection en route to his first victory of the season at the Ocean Speedway.
Sander’s has been a mark of consistency to start the season with the Ocean Sprints and looks to be the front runner to bring home his first track title at the quarter-mile. The win came aboard his family owned North County Plastering/ Lancaster Locksmith No. 17 Sprint Car.
“It feels great to get a win here at Ocean Speedway in our family car tonight,” Sanders commented on the front stretch. “I got out front there and just focused on hitting my marks through traffic. I kept expecting to see somebody alongside me, but luckily traffic worked to my advantage tonight. I want to thank everyone involved with the track and all the people that help us out.”
Morgan Hill’s Nicholas Ringo and Sander’s drew the front row for the main event and when the green waved it was Ringo who jumped out in front. Ringo has been impressive at times in his Ocean Speedway starts and led the first laps of his Taco Bravo Sprints career on Friday night. Sanders would step up his challenges though and eventually grab the lead with Campbell’s Brent Kaeding and Fremont’s Shane Golobic in toe.
The track surface changed as the race went on and Sander’s certainly had the right combination, as he worked traffic like a magician and pulled away to claim the checkered flag by 2.499 seconds over Kaeding and Golobic. The only possible issue for Sanders came on lap 14 when he nearly spun out in traffic but was able to keep it going.
It marked the second runner up finish of the season for Kaeding in his two Ocean Sprints starts. For Golobic it was also his second podium finish of the season at his home track.
After winning the first two rounds of the season Easton’s Tommy Tarlton brought home a fourth place finish on Friday, with Fresno’s Kyler Shaw having an impressive run to score his first career Sprint Car top-five in fifth. Ringo brought home a sixth place finish at conclusion, followed by Salinas’ Jason Chisum, Fresno’s Koen Shaw, Gilroy’s Kurt Nelson and Stockton’s Brad Furr.
Jason Chisum was the night’s High Five Pizza Hard Charger award winner coming from 14th to seventh in the feature. The Beer Optics Hard Luck award went to Fremont’s Anthony Espinoza. Three heat races were held during the night were claimed by Brad Furr, Kurt Nelson and Brent Kaeding. Furr opened the night by setting the Ray Scheidts Electric Fast Time.
